Pistol and Personal Protection in the Home
This 6-month course provides training in safety and operation of pistols and is certified by the National Rifle Association, exceeding the safety course requirement for a permit to carry a concealed handgun in the state of Michigan. It also incorporates the NRA's Personal Protection in the Home course. Students who complete this course will be well-prepared for sport and recreation shooting as well as for self and home defense.
Basic skills covered include:
- Basic firearms safety and operation
- Range safety
- Anatomy and operation of the various pistol styles. Students will be able to unload any pistol.
- Ammunition types and using the correct ammunition
- Cleaning, maintenance, storage and legal transport
- Shooting stances, positions and technique
- Considerations in purchasing a pistol
- Pistol concealment and related laws
The self and home defense portion of this course will include:
- Mental preparation for defensive shooting, including awareness, avoidance and diffusion of dangerous situations
- Defensive shooting positions and technique
- Using cover and concealment
- Confronting an intruder and controlling the situation
- Laws and legal ramifications of shooting in self-defense
- Mental and emotional aftermath and recovery
Students will be given considerable time to practice shooting and feedback from the instructor on improving form and accuracy.
